A Protein Shake makes for a great breakfast

Let’s not forget about our #1… Eat! Sorry blog and run, but Eat will always be my #1. Here’s a little recipe for a great protein shake that we love at our house. It makes for a great start to your (eating/blogging/running) day.

The Recipe:
1/2 Frozen Banana
1 Scoop Vanilla Protein Powder
1/4 Cup Frozen Blue Berries
1 tsp Flax Oil (optional)
1/2 Water or Skim Milk
6 Ice Cubes
1/4 Oats (uncooked) – a great alternative for fiber: 1tsp Psyllium Seed Husks

Blend all together adding extra liquid as needed.

Psyllium Seed Husks can be found in the bulk food bins at your local health food store

Our Preferred Protein:

I’d love to know what your favorite (healthy) breakfast is?
do share.

This looks amazing. I am going to track down the psyllium seed husks–I love finding an easy way to add a little fiber!

  2. I love homemade granola and plain low-fat yogurt for breakfast with whatever fresh fruit is in season. I like the low-fat yogurt instead of fat-free because it seems to keep me full longer so I don’t snack on junk!

I whole heartedly agree…Eat with always be #1 :) thank you so much for posting this. Everyone has been saying to have a protein shake for breakfast and I didn’t know how to make one! Love the magic bullet. I need to get one. When I started training for my first marathon and asked runner friends what was the best thing they bought for running…so many said the magic bullet! I’ll be getting one soon! Thanks so much!

Never thought of the Magic Bullet for morning protein shakes. Yum! I use our Braun hand blender thingy. I like the Carbo Solutions chocolate protein powder with a tablespoon of peanut butter. Blend with skim milk and enjoy!

  5. I never thought of adding oatmeal! Totally doing that in the morning!

  6. We are big shake fans at our house!! Can’t wait for spring and summer and we can use fresh berries!! Yummmy!

I’ve been eating oatmeal every day — with raisins, a bit of of maple syrup and a little milk. I also drink fresh OJ (my new addiction, esp. with blood oranges).

My favorite morning shake is all about bananas:)

1/4 cup milk, 1/4 plain nonfat yogurt, a splash of oj, 2 tbs peanut butter, a dribble of honey, 1/4 oatmeal, some cinnamon and a banana! Blend it up and it’s good to go!

I need to research the protein powders — probably would be a good addition to the mix.

  8. That looks awesome! Make some to go on our next run together!!! ;)

I couldn’t agree more with #1 eat! Myself and my 3 kids have always started our days with a great protein shake (and a slice of whole wheat toast to round their meal off). I love some of your ingredients in the picture like the Barleans oil. I used to always buy whey protein and use soy milk sometimes for the extra protein, until I read about protein powders that were all plant based. I loved the idea of more plant protein as we all know how good it is for our heart, bones and ph balance which keeps our acid levels down, which inturn keeps disease away. I started using Vega which was pretty good, but a little harder to swallow due to texture and flavor, then……I found the Pure Trim shakes which are all plant protein, but also have essential fatty acids, supergreens, and plant calcium and taste awesome!!! All you do is add ice, water and favorite fruit. We have been using these shakes for 4 years now and will never change. If I drink one a day, I maintain my ideal weight, but if I need to drop a few pounds (like after xmas) then I drink two a day for 10 days or so. If you love your morning shake but would like one that tastes better and is nutrient rich please go to my website and have a look.
Just want to add, please people do not worry about the fat in yogurt. You need the fat to assimilate the calcium and other minerals. Your body utilizes the fat it needs at gets rid of the rest. The low fat craze is just from all the marketing. We have always ate full fat yogurt and love it. My kids are toned and in excellent shape and I have kept a healthy weight my whole life and we eat all the fat we want (healthy fats I mean) Check out the best fat of all…Extra Virgin Coconut Oil…an amazing fat.
    Great blog! Keep it up!
